Will guests know they're talking to AI?

August 28, 2026 · hosting · trust

Sometimes, yes. A guest who asks for the gate code at midnight and gets a complete, correct answer in under a minute may well guess that a person did not type it. But when hosts ask this question, they are usually asking two other things underneath it: will the AI say something wrong to my guest, and will my guest feel fobbed off? Those are the right worries, and they have concrete answers.

What guests actually notice

Guests do not grade you on who typed the reply. They notice two things: how fast the answer came, and whether it was right. A slow answer leaves someone standing at the door. A wrong one sends them to the wrong parking spot. The review mentions the wait or the mix-up, never the typing.

Hosts already automate more than they think. Scheduled check-in messages, saved replies, autoresponders — every serious host uses some of it, and guests are used to it. An AI co-host sits in the same category. The difference is that it reads the actual question first, so the guest asking about early check-in does not get the wifi password.

Where wrong answers come from, and how they are prevented

An AI that improvises from general knowledge will eventually invent something — a gate code, a checkout time, a pet policy you do not have. That failure mode is real, and it is the reason StayPilot answers only from your property's own details: your listing, your house manual, the knowledge you gave it. Each property keeps a separate knowledge base, so the beach condo's wifi answer never goes to the cabin guest.

When it is not confident, it does not guess. Every reply carries a confidence score, and below the bar the message is held as a draft for your review instead of sent. A guest question the AI cannot answer from your details becomes your question, with the context attached — not an improvisation in your name.

What the AI never answers

Some messages should never get an automated reply, no matter how good it is. A refund request, a complaint, anything touching safety or a dispute: these always route to you. That is policy, not a setting you can forget to check. The AI drafts a response, hands you the context, and waits.

And a guest who wants a person can always get one. Replying "human" hands the conversation to you at any point. Nobody is trapped in a loop arguing with software — that failure mode belongs to airline chatbots, and it is designed out here.

Draft mode while trust builds

You do not have to take any of this on faith, because the system starts with you holding the pen. New accounts default to draft-only: the AI writes, you press send. For the first week or two you read every draft, fix the rare one that misses, and watch it learn your properties. Autopilot is something you enable when you have watched it be right — per conversation, not all-or-nothing — and you can drop back to draft-only or jump into any thread instantly.

Every message it sends and every action it takes is logged: what happened, why, and what information it used. If something ever reads wrong, you can see exactly where it came from and correct the knowledge base so it never reads wrong again.

Should you tell guests?

That is your call, and there is nothing to hide either way. StayPilot publishes a plain-language AI and automation disclosure covering what is automated, what never is, and the safeguards in between. Many hosts simply say "our team replies quickly at all hours," which is true. The useful framing: the answers are yours — your door code, your parking rules, your house manual. The AI is delivering your knowledge faster than you could at 2am, not making things up on your behalf.

The honest bottom line: a guest may suspect the 40-second midnight reply was not typed by a sleepy human. What they will remember is that the code worked, the directions were right, and when they asked about a refund, a real person answered. Get those three right and "was it AI?" never makes it into a review.

The fastest way to judge it is on your own listing. Paste it in and ask the questions your guests ask — the code, the parking, the late checkout — and see whether you can tell. Then imagine reading those answers over coffee instead of writing them at midnight.
